Lawton Memorial Library Board Meeting

Regular Board Meeting          Tuesday, January 28, 2020

*6:16 p.m. Meeting was called to order by Chair Barbara Melvin. Roll call was taken with board members Melvin, Gail Muller, Gwendolyn Hatfield, Georgia Everson, and Kimberly Walker present. Absent was Carol Persons and Donna Niles. Also present was Librarian Jessica Slaney.

*Verification of posting at the Bank, Post Office, and Village Office on January 27, 2020 was given.

*A copy of the November 26, 2019 minutes was given board members to review. Hatfield moved, Everson seconded to approve the minutes as written. (Carried).

*Financial report: Reviewed the 2019 year. The ending balance was a negative $312.61. For transitioning with Rita retiring and hiring a new librarian, this wasn’t bad for the year. There are carryovers of $2,092.84 in resource grant funds, $564.63 in the Gates grant, and $1,184.50 for the Cropp grant. The savings has a balance of $17,350.94, plus the 2 CD’s of $3,884.66 and $9,456.60. Also reviewed a comparison of the budget numbers to the actual numbers for 2019. Muller moved, Everson seconded to approve the financial report. (Carried).

*Statistical Report: Reviewed statistics for the 2019 year and for January 2020. Circulation in 2019 was 18,792, down 1,200+ from 2018. Looked over the other numbers. Added in 2020 is a chess club and a coffee and conversations group.

*Friends Update:

**In the past, “Love Your Library" month was celebrated in February. Due to uncertain weather during this time, it’s being discussed to change it to an event for National Library Week (in April).

**They’re also looking at making some changes at the Fourth of July Music in the Park event that they participate in.

**Planning to donate $300 to the Summer Library program.

**New officers were elected for the 2020 year.

*Directors Report:

**The I-pad we were sent to try out that has games on it for kids isn’t working too well. The batteries run out fast. So probably won’t go with them.

**Jessica is looking to start her certification classes this fall. She has 4 years to take 4 classes.

**Jessica reported things are going well. She’s been under the weather some in December and January but getting back in the routine.

**Public Access to Tesla Power Wall app: At the November meeting, we agreed to put this app on the library and village websites. Since then, Jessica found out the full program would be available to the public. People could possibly make changes or do things to it. It would be in our best interest to not put it out there. If anyone is interested, Jessica can still show people things at the library. Hatfield moved, Muller seconded to keep the app closed to the public due to the openness of the app, but it will be available to show people at the library if they want to see it. (Carried).

**Tesla Video: Jessica showed a short marketing video Current Electric had made for promoting the Tesla power walls. They interviewed Village President Cheryl Purvis, Library Chair Barbara Melvin, and Librarian Jessica Slaney.

*Public comments: Barb asked if anyone had come up with any ideas yet on where to put the TV Kim Kafka had donated or an idea for a memorial for Delores Sandmire. We previously discussed a bird bath, and maybe a couple of trees for the patio area. With the water problem still not resolved, decided to wait awhile on the patio items. Barb mentioned going to a home show in March and talking with some landscapers about our water situation.

*The next meeting was scheduled for March 24, 2020, at 6:15 p.m.

*Hatfield moved, Muller seconded to adjourn. (Carried). Adjourned at 6:58 p.m.
