Lawton Memorial Library Board Special Meeting
Tuesday, September 12, 2023
1). Chair Barbara Melvin called the special board meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. at the Lawton Memorial Library. Roll call was taken with all board members present: Melvin, Donna Niles, Gwendolyn Hatfield, Georgia Everson, Carol Persons, Gail Muller, and Kimberly Walker. Also present was Librarian Lisa Ahler, Barbara Sarnowski, Jean Beck, Peggy Pasker, Kristina Ralph, Brad and Carolyn Steinmetz, Susan Reed, and Becky Hooker.
2). Verification of posting at the Bank, Post Office, and Village Office on September 11, 2023, was given.
3). This is a joint meeting with the Friends of the Lawton Memorial Library group, for finalizing plans for the 100-year anniversary celebration of the library.

Events: The Open House is October 11th, from 5-7 p.m. We will have an introduction of board members, Friends officers, etc. Brad Steinmetz has agreed to do a history of the library, and Village President Frank Quinn will also speak. Barb Melvin will do the introductions. We will have some refreshments, items from 1923 to 2023, and beverages. And look into inviting former librarians.

Displays: Donna, Carol, and Georgia, along with Barb S., Becky Hooker, Susan Reed, and Maggie Doherty are working on items to display in the corner curio cabinet. They will have 1920’s fiction books, textbooks, cookbooks, and little items to add with it. Also a children’s shelf. And looking to use the big counter (circulation desk area), for displays of pictures, games, clothes, etc.

Activities: Peggy and Gwen are looking at a scavenger hunt in the garden (for the whole month of October). The LAPA group is getting involved, to do a raffle. They are contacting area businesses for a donation. People will put their name in for a drawing, which will be held on November 1st. During National Friends of the Library week, on October 16th and 18th, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. we will have root beer floats, a silent movie, and a contest for creating flapper headbands or paper airplanes. Prizes will be given out for this. There will also be prizes for every 100th patron during October. Persons moved, Niles seconded to purchase six $20 gift certificates to give to each 100th person. (Carried). Talked some more on a time capsule. Lisa is working on wrapping up books, for a “Blind Date with a Book” activity. Georgia said she would check with the Lions Club for a donation of books for prizes. Lisa has ordered pens and chip clips to give out. Susan will make a poster with the activities. Jean Beck mentioned a banner for out front. She will check into a price with Pro-Line.
*Look at meeting again at the end of September to hold another joint meeting for finalizing plans.
4). Everson moved, Hatfield seconded to adjourn. (Carried). Adjourned at 6:00 p.m.
