Fiber Optic Technology

So, fiber technology is important, but just how important? Vernon Communications Cooperative invested millions of dollars in Fiber Optic Technology over the past decade. They did this because members need it now and for new technologies emerging every day. It provides an unparalleled experience of speed and bandwidth for customers, is more secure and reliable, and uses less energy.

VC Co-op has constructed over 2,000 miles of fiber optic cable!

Fiber Technology is prepared for the advancements of home automation, distance learning, telemedicine, video conferencing, and emerging technologies. As an economic driver, fiber optic technology is helping to grow our local businesses and support telecommuting and home-based enterprise.

Fiber Optic Technology uses a cable, made up of thin strands of glass or plastic fibers, to transmit data. Just one strand is less than a tenth as thick as a human hair and can carry tens of thousands of telephone calls at any given time. That’s just ONE strand. An entire cable of fiber strands can carry up to several MILLION calls simultaneously. You may not need to make a thousand phone calls simultaneously, but here are a few more reasons to love fiber:

  • Stream HD video content from Netflix, Hulu or any other streaming video services with no delays or buffering.

  • Play online games in HD with high-quality video content and smooth connections.

  • Enjoy your favorite music, streamed from the cloud, with uninterrupted crystal clear sound quality.

  • Support all devices in your home at the same time. Stream 10 HD movies, video chat with FaceTime, upload hundreds of photos, stream music from Pandora, and perform multi-player online gaming all at the same time.

The main benefit of fiber is the amount of data that can be transmitted, which in short means that residents and businesses can do more simultaneously. It is the only way that we can meet the every growing technology and communication needs for our members.

Fiber optics is less impacted by storms than copper which is a conductor of electricity.

Because having Internet access is key to almost everything we do today, fiber Internet can increase the value of your home by an average of 3.1%. It’s comparable to putting a fireplace or patio in your home. It connects us to education, job opportunities, healthcare, entertainment and much more. If your trying to sell your home, having internet access is key and without it, the sale of your home could become difficult. Working from home has become desirable in both urban and rural areas. Many people love rural living, and whether you’re on vacation or making it your home, Internet access is almost as important as air conditioning or heat in your home! According to Rural Telecom magazine, Internet driven transactions make up nearly 50% of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) or $9.6 trillion annually. These transactions are estimated to grow more than 65% by 2022 to $14 trillion per year. Neighboring counties with insufficient fiber are struggling to sell their homes and because VC Co-op has made it a priority to bring fiber to our members, most homes in our county sell quickly. We continually strive to construct fiber to the communities we serve.
